Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was a spiritual leader and a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He was a disciple of the 19th century Indian mystic Ramakrishna and was the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission.

Vivekananda traveled to the United States in 1893 and represented India at the first World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where he gave a series of lectures on Hinduism and the spiritual practices of India. His speeches, particularly his opening address, were well received and he became known as "The Messenger of Indian Wisdom to the Western World."

Vivekananda's teachings emphasized the importance of practical spiritual education, the unity of all religions, and the potential of every individual to achieve spiritual enlightenment. He also emphasized the importance of social service and the need to alleviate poverty and suffering.

After his return to India, Vivekananda established the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, which continue to be influential spiritual organizations in India and around the world. He is also considered as a youth icon in India, and his birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day in India.

Vivekananda's speeches and writings have been widely translated and continue to be popular today. He is considered as one of the most important spiritual leaders of modern India and his teachings continue to inspire many people around the world.
