The tripartite division of history is a way of dividing history into three distinct periods: ancient history, medieval history, and modern history.

Ancient history typically refers to the period from the beginning of recorded human history (around 3000 BCE) to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE. This period is characterized by early civilizations, such as those in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and is known for its significant contributions to art, architecture, philosophy, and politics.

Medieval history covers the period from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the end of the Middle Ages, which is generally considered to be around the 15th century. This period is characterized by the rise of Christianity, the formation of nation-states, and the growth of feudalism. It includes the periods of the Dark Ages and the High Middle Ages, as well as the Renaissance.

Modern history begins in the 15th century and covers the period up to the present day. It is characterized by the growth of capitalism, the emergence of the nation-state, and the Scientific Revolution. It includes the periods of the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, and the two World Wars.

It's important to note that this division of history is not universally accepted and some other ways of dividing history exist, such as dividing it into Antiquity, Middle Ages and Modernity or splitting the medieval period into early, high and late Middle Ages.
