India is a federal parliamentary democratic republic, which means that it is a federation of states with a parliamentary system of government and a president as the head of state. In India, power is divided between the federal government and the individual states, and the citizens elect representatives to the national Parliament as well as to the state legislative assemblies. The Prime Minister of India, who is appointed by the President, is the head of the government and leads the executive branch.
